Hon. Lee Martin Pays Tribute to Mr E. Newman, C.M.G.
ACCOMPLISHMENT OP OUTSTANDING IMPORTANCE.
Eulogising the part played by Mr. E. Newman, C.M.G., Chairman of Trustees, iu the establishment of Flock House and the continued success of its operations at the ofliciul gathering at Flock House yesterday, lion. Leo Martin, Minister for Agriculture, said:—“On this occasion of the ofliciul taking over by the Government of Flock House Station 1 wish to puy a sincere and well deserved tribute to the chairman and his co-trustees in having accomplished something of outstanding im portance, us well as something worth while. The chairman has outlined to you the history of this unique institution, which for the past 12 years we have known as ‘Flock House.' You will agree with mo that he has been extremely modest iu referring to the very important and valuable services he himself has rendered. To those of us who know the chairman this is just what wo would expect; but 1 wish to repair to some extent the omissions. If was tlio vision and foresight of the chairman which ‘made possible the organisation of the institution, llis brain conceived the idea of providing a fund from the New Zealand fcSheopowners which was to be an acknowledgment of the debt which they owed to British seamen. Having got that far the next, business was to seek the aid and cooperation of tho sheopowne/a. Here again we come face to face with the groat influence and ability of the chairman in placing the scheme before his fellow farmers, Tho work was not com plete when he had secured the co-opera-tion; the major programme was only beginning, and once again the organising ability of the chairman was in evidence, and resulting from this was the purchase of the land and buildings and the inauguration of Flock House.’’
