General News From Hawke’s Bay
ABOUT PEOPU3 AND EVENTS. With five days remaining before the penalty is levied, 40 per cent, of the total amount of rates struck by the Hawke’s Bay County Council has been paid in, over £22,000 having now been collected. As the final day, February 14, falls on a Sunday, the following Monday will be allowed in which to pay. The volume of payments has increased greatly over the last two days, both Monday and Tuesday bringing in well over £2OOO each. The annual meeting of the Ormondville District Golf Club was preaided over by Mr. Searle Ellingham. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. L. G. Wright; president, Mr. Searle Ellingham (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs. F. J. Sands, H. B. Newling and T. Fothergill; secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. C. Newling; trustee, Mr. C. Williams; club captain, Mr, Basil ■Ellingham; ladies’ captain, Mrs. W. A. Trask; management committee, Messrs. H. O. Baines, A. E. Edgecombe, W T . Barclay, C. Williams, W. Ellingham, W. Kane, and W. A. Trask; handicap committee, Messrs. J. Mad son, R. O. Baines and A. E. Edgecombe; grounds committee, A. E. Edgecombe and H. Sands; * ladies’ secretary, Mrs. D. Dew; auditor, Mr. Studd; green-keeper, Mr. John Fitzgerald (re-elected). “They simply ate up all the information we could give thorn and hungered for more facts,” said an official of the Heretaunga Swimming Club to a reporter when commenting on the practice of th© members of the Australian surf team while in Hawke’s Bay to jot down in a note book various pieces of information about the district. “They made it quite obvious that they intended to make the most of their tour, and the keen interest they displayed in the life of the people here and other information was amazing,” he said. 4 ‘lt was clearly no casual gleaning of facU after the manner of tourists, but an honest endeavour to broaden their outlook and absorb knowledge.” All the members of the Australian surf teeam are keen collectors of me- 4 mentoes, and it is their desire to have some reminder of every town and district they visit. They were very much taken with the Heretaunga Swimming and Life-Saving Club’s coat badge during their visit to Hastings, and before departing they were each presented by the club with a badge. Their desire for mementoes is expressed in another direction, for it is not the policy of the team to collect the trophies they *ecuro at the various carnivals they participate in but to pool the prize money rind request tho club concerned to purchase a number of books as prizes.
