Cuba Street Methodist Ladies’ Guild

ENTERS UPON ANOTHER YEAR’S ACTIVITIES Cuba Street Methodist Ladies' Guild held their first meeting for the year in the Sunday school on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. G. G. Hancox presiding. Vases of vivid gladioli and hydrangeas were attractively arranged in the room. Sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs. E. Whitehead and with Mrs. Groves in the loss of her husband was expressed and it was decided that the secretary should write conveying the guild's sympathy. Members stood a moment in silence as a mark of respect. The meeting opened as usual with a hymn after which Mrs. A. Blakemore took the Scripture reading. In extending a welcome to all present, the president expressed the hope that the coming year would be a happy and most successful one. The committee had decided to have a programme of the guild's activities printed and it was hoped this would stimulate interest among the members. It was the intention of the guild to hold a fair, possibly a spring fair, later on in the year and the talent competition would conclude in May. During the afternoon Valmai Dalton delighted with two elocutionary items, ‘ 1 Smiles" and "Billy Boy." Mrs. W. Lyon was heard in two pleasing vocal numbers, "Not Understood" aiA3 "In an Old-fashioned Town," and pianoforte solos, “Revolutionary Pselude" (Chopin), and "The Music Box," were contributed by Miss I. Currin. Mrs. P. J. Meller proposed a vote of thanks to the performers and also conveyed a warm welcome to Mrs. Hancox, who was occupying the position of president for the first time and to Mrß. L. M. Boyes, tho new secretary. The feature of tho afternoon was a roll call, "One of My Greatest Bless ings," which brought forth many original answers. All present joined in singing "Count Your Many Blessings" as a fitting introduction to the roll call, Mrs. Lyon singing the verses and Mrs. Dorset being at the piano. Now members welcomed during the afternoon were Mrs. E. O. Johansen and Mrs. Stern, formerly of New Plymouth. Hostesses who served a dainty afternoon tea were Mesdamea F. W. Dorset, F. D. Budden, L. M. Boyes and J. 'Allsop.
