Five ‘Maids in Brittany Rose Chiffon Gowns

Beautiful gowns, lovely dowers and an air of happiness made the wedding )£ Hester Mary Herrick and John Jhurchill Elworthy one which will be jng remembered by all the guests. The bride is the elder daughter of .Jr and Mrs Frank Herrick, of Tautane, ilcrbertville, and the bridegroom tliu younger son of Mr and Mre Arthur Elworthy, Holme Station, South Canterbury, The bridegroom was formerly aide-de-camp to tho Governor-General, Viscount Blodisloe.

In St. John's Cathedral, Napier, where the wedding was solemnised, tho flowers were beautifully arranged. Largo jars of pastel-shaded hydrangeas were placed at intervals along the aislo and crystal bowls of rosebud* wero arranged on either side of the altar. A bow of whito satin ribbon and a rosebud marked the guests’ pews. The Bishop of Waiapu, the Rt. Rev. H. W. Williams, officiated at the cero* mony and was assisted by Dean Brocklehurst. Mr P. W. Tombs presided at tho organ.

The bride made a lovely picture when she entered the church with her father and her livo ’maids. She wore a gown of mothcr-of-pearl pcau d’ ange satin with a vory long rounded train inset in a V shape. In front the skirt was fashioned to continue up from the waist in a V-shape to the neck, slighi gathering on each side of this making an effective finish. At tho back the <orsage was swathed across and con tinued to form the cash at the back only. The long sleeves were given fullness with pleats at the shoulders and were tight-fitting at the wrists and finished with tiny satin-covered buttons. Her veil of finest tulle was arranged across the back of tho head with a pleated frill and in front with a halo of tiny real flowers and fell softly over her gown to form a second train. Bbo carried a shower bouquet of water-lilies in off-white tonings, etephanotis, and orchids arranged with maidenhair fern and finished with a bow of off-whito satin ribbon.

The bride wore her parents’ gift, a necklace of pearls, and also the gift from tho bridegroom, a wrist watch sot with diamonds.

A most unusual but very attractive tshado of Brittany rose rippled chiffon •'was worn by all five ’maids who were itlie Misses Una Herrick, sister of the :bride (chief), Julia Herrick, cousin of •;tho bride, Phillipa Riddiford, Audrey ;Ormond and Diana Elworthy (Timaru), cousin of the bridegroom. Their gowns ware exactly alike, being fashioned with a softly swathed corsago looped in the front and continuing down the deep V dceollotage at the back, tho waist being finished with n wide soft sash. Very short draped •leoves were finished with a tiny bow of the same matorial. The skirts were very full below the knees and wore edged with a double row of cording which made an effective finish.

Each maid carried a round bouquet composed of off-white water lilies and maidenhair fern with satin ribbons, and nuadbauds of tiny real flowers in the same tonings as their gowns encircled their heads. The bridegroom’s gift tc each maid was a French petit-poini powder compact. Mr Anthony Elworthy, the bride groom’s cousin, carried out the duties of best man and the ushers at tin church were Lieutenant Terry Herrick and Messrs Jasper and Dennis Herrick. The beautiful home and gardens of tho bride’s aunt, Miss Ruth Herrick Lighthouse road, Napier, were a love!) setting for the wedding reception which was attended by about 30u guests from all parts of New Zealand.

Huge jacaranda and oleander trees, a mass of blue and pink blossoms, surrounded the lawns, where stood a largo marquee for the wedding breakfast. This was very jolly and the toast to the bride and bridegroom was propoeod tjy a very old friend, Mr Arthur Duncan, of Masterton.
