“ESCAPE FROM DEVIL’S ISLAND” GIVES STIRRING PICTURISATION (Kosy: Screening Saturday.) The harrowing drama of Devil’s Island spring to vivid life again on the silver screen in Columbia's “Escape From Devil’s Island,” a lusty and stirring picturizatiou of the infamous French penal colony. Notably important about tho new film’s remarkable success is the adroit combination of a powerful arid gripping story from the pen of Fred Do Gresac, intelligent direction by Albert Rogell and an authentic and colourful atmospheric production. All of which serves to enhance and emphasize the skilful performances registered by Victor Jory, Florence Rice, Norman Foster and Stanley Andrews iu the leading featured roles. Opening with gay Paris scenes, conjtinuing with inside glimpses of international spies and their clever machinations, the action shifts to tho dreaded | prisoners’ island off the coast of South America. There Victor Jory and Florence Rice, established close to the prison jungle, conspire to effect the escape of her father, Stanley Andrews, and of a convict who has befriended him, played by Norman Foster. With many breath-taking moments, the liUa moves swiftly to a heart gripping climax, cleverly contrived and convincingly executed. Underlying tho main theme of the horrors of this tropical hell hole is a sincere and tender romance between young Foster and the lovely Miss Rice.
