From Our Own Correspondent In anticipation of the Shannon Horse Sports, which are to be held, as usual on Easter Monday, the Shannon Horse Sports committee held its annual general meeting in the Council Chambers last Wednesday evening, there being a large and enthusiastic attendance of members. Those present were: Messrs A. E. Hyde (president), B, J. Brann (hon, secretary), G. G. Mitchell (treasurer), C. Guerin, E. Perry, R. Harding, E. T. Moody, W. Radford, W. Moynihan, O. Larsen, 1.. Easton, J Gray, W. Higgie, R. AlcKenzie, It. Lind, S. W. Barber, F. Peach, K. Carter, J. D. Campbell, A, Tremewan, D. Cole, C. Cameron and G. Third. In congratulating the committee on the succeess of last year’s meeting, which showed a profit of £3l 12s 7d, Mr A. E. Hyde expressed his appreciation of the work of the dance committee, Alessrs J. Gray and F. Peach, whose efforts resulted in a successful dance on Easter Alonday night. The profits from this dance amounted to £ls 3s 9d which in itself was evidence of the efficient way in which th© dance was managed. Air Hyde also expressed tho thanks of the club to those members who gave their time to installing the power at the grounds, thus saving the club big expense. In conclusion, Air Hyde remarked that it was a matter on which tho club might congratulate itself that the Easter Monday in Shannon had become a day which wa.s looked forward to not Only by the residents of Shannon and district but also by many people from distant parts of the North Island. \ The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Air A. E. Hyde; vicepresident, Mr S. W. Barber; treasure?-, Air G. G. Mitchell; hon.‘secretary, Mr E. T. Aloody; executive committee: Alessrs W. Aloynihan, R. R. Lind, K. Carter, O. Larsen, W. Radford sen., IS. Brann, C. Guerin, F. Peach, A. Tremewan, D. Cole, C. Cameron, W. Higgie, E. Perry, R. Harding, R. McKenzie, J. Gray, J. D. Campbell, and I. Easton; postponement and protest committee, any three of the executive committee, together with the four executive officers; hon. auditor, Mr C. AI. Conquest. Paying tribute to tho excellent and painstaking work of the out-going secretary, Br B. Brann, Air W. Aloynihan said that it was to be regretted that Mr Brann found it impossible to carry on. A vote of thanks to Air Brann was carried with acclamation. A motion by Air G. G. Alitchell that an assistant-secretary be appointed in view of the extra heavy work involved during the next few weeks, was defeated, as it was the opinion of the meeting that members of the club would bo only too pleased to assist the secretary if he found himself unable to cope with the work. The donation by Air V. J. Simpson of a five-guinea cup, was announced, it being the desire of the donor that the cup should remain in the district, and if possible, be fpr local competition to bo won outright after three successive wins. This donation was accepted, and a vote of thanks to Mr Simpson was carried by acclamation. On tho motion of Mr F. Peach, it was decided that the donor of a trophy of any value shall be given a free membership ticket. The following amendments were made to the programme: Event No. 4: Pony race, walk and gallop, 12 hands and under, altered to 14.2 hands and under. Event. No. 10: This is to be called the ■'Challenge Jump,” 11 stone and over, open to horses that have never won more than one open jump at any A. and P. Show or sports meeting. The prizes were fixed at £3 and the Simpson Challenge Cup for first; 2nd £2 2s, and 3rd £1 Is, the' dup to be subject to conditions attached. Events no s. 11 and lo are to be transposed on the programme. Event No. 15, pony racd walk, race and gallop, 12 hands and under, altered to ,14.2 hands. Event; No, 17 is altered to an addition race. An extra event, a shirt race, is added to the programme. With regard to children’s events, It was decided to place tho organising of these in the hands of Air C. Cole. A sum of £3 was allocated for prize money, and the number of eveniß was fixed at eight, with trophies to the value of 4s, 2s and la for Ist, 2nd., and 3rd, respectively. Iu addition, every entrant will receive a free ice-cream. It was decided to add the programme of children’s events - to the printed programme. Regarding a sheepdog exhibition, Mr Lind was empowered to arrange with a farmer with dogs to give a demonstration. The event is to be advertised on the programme. With regard to the catering. It was decided that .the W.D.F.U. be asked to tender. After somo discussion, the fee for membership tickets was altered to four shillings, and it was decided to have the necessary tickets xirinted. Competitors’ entry fees are to be charged os usual, but are to be refunded to all competitors, on their first entry, provided that the entry fee does not exceed the gate fee, in which case there will bo no refund. It was further agreed that tho sale of membership tickets shall cease on the Saturday before the fixture. Personal Aliss Knowles, of Palmerston North, was a week-end visitor to Shannon. Miss M. Forbes has returned home from an enjoyable holiday at Paraparaumu ; beach. Rev. and Airs McDonald and family, who have been the guests of Mr and Mrs Ewen. Barber, have returned to their homo in Alasterton. Aliss AI: C. Tennant , cousin of the Countess of Oxford and Asquith, also Aliss Boult and Miss Hawkins , of London, were the guests of Mr and Mrs Munford of Stout street, last week, and aro now en route to tho Homeland, again. On Wednesday evening, January 27, a number of friends paid a surprise visit to tlio residence of Air and Mrs G. Quarrie, to bid farewell to Aliss Joyce Quarrie, who is taking up nursing in the Dannevlrke Hospital A very pleasant time was spent in games and singing and during ! the evening Joyce was the recipient oseveral beautiful presents. After the speeches and wishes, amid\ cheers and laughter, the party came to a close with tho singing of "For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” BOWIB. At the committee meeting of the Shannon . Bowling and Croquet Club, held on Thursday evening last, it was decided to hold on Thursday, March 14. a similar en- ' tei'tainment to the Aladigras held last year. This time, however, there will be no baby show nor children’s elocution competition, as the committee wishes to introduce fresh items to vary the interest. Keen interest is 'being displayed In the game of bowls by members of the fair sex, a number of whom were to be seen on the local green the other evening. The strong, silent members of the club will have to look to their laurels, as it is ru--1 moured that the ladies are showing great | promise in the ancient art. General I A movement is on foot to form a brass band in Shannon. Tho Borough already owns the bass-drum and there are four known players In tho district and no doubt, if the band were formed, other players would volunteer their services. Mr Weston, late deputy band-master to the Wellington Mission Band, and now in tho employ of Air S. W. Carter, is prepared to take over the :onductorsh!p of the band if it Is formed. Pleased as the local kiddles are at the lifting of the ban on the picture theatres, as from Saturday last, the news that the school committee has decided to cancel the school picnic this year will be a great disappointment to the kiddles, as this outing is ono to which they look forward eagerly. At the last meeting of the Borough Council, Air Harry Warman was appointed dog-tax collector for the Borough of ShannoO^ As a result of a competition which was conducted among the financial members of the Horowhenua A. and P. Association on Saturday, Mr A. E. Hyde was fortunate in being elected as an honorary life member of the Association. Mrs Roberta, of Venn street, had the misfortune last week to run a needle into the palm of her hand while washing clothes, the needle being Inadvertently left in the garment. Aledlcal aid was sought and the suffierer taken to the Palmerston North Hospital. Considerable difficulty was experienced In getting the needle out, and afterwards six stitches were required. Mrs Roberts is now making good progress. The. final results of tho Health Stamp campaign conducted in Shannon, show that the sales of Health Stamps amounted to £l7, and that donations, entertainments etc., amounted to £l3 lls 2d, a total of £3O 31s 2d, as compared with last year’s returns of stamps and covers, £23 2s and donations, £ls 0s 6d, a total of £3B 2s 6d. The net amount available for Health Camp purposes Is £22 Is 2d, last year the total reaching £2S 12s 6d. School Committee. A meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held in the school room on Alonday evening. Those present were: Alessrs Best (chairman), J. Campbell (secretary), Bovis, Cronquest. Cole, Roach and McDonald (headmaster). Apologies for absence wero received from Messrs Brann and Ostler. The Education Board advised that Mr J.
