Life-saving Display
SIX THOUSAND WATCH AUSTRALIAN TEAM. (Special to “Times.”) NAPIER, Feb. 8. Six thousand people from Napier arid Hastings gathered on the Marine Parade, Napier, yesterday, afternoon to witness a fine display of surfing and life-saving by the Australian surf team, which is at present engaged in a tour of the Dominion. The high standard of training and co-ordination of the members of the team made the display well worth watching, and the applause of the spectators fully indicated their appreciation of the exhibition. Clad in plain black swimming costumes, the team paraded on the lawn before the South African war memorial and gave a marching display to music by the Napier Technical College Memorial Band. This was followed by two displays, of life-saving technique, the team using its own reel to demonstrate the orthodox Tescue and the “beltman’s rescue.” The display was followed by an exhibition of surfing. A moderate swell was breaking on the foreshore and proved ideal for the display. The team give/a another demonstration at Napier to-night, and will appear to-morrow night at the Maddisou Baths, Hastings. The visitors will leave Napier on Wednesday morning for Wellington.
