Spiritualist “With Mission" Loses Libel Action
An abrupt end was called to a libel action in the King’s Bench Division, England, by Airs Nesta E. A. Lewis, spiritualist, known us “Nosla of the Forest,” who complained of an article in “John Bull,” alleging she was u charlatan who made her living by deliberate fraud. Lord Hewart withdrew tho case from tho special jury, and entered judgment for defendants, with costs. Airs Lewis, who lives in Commercial road, Bournemouth, answering Mr G. Beyfus (for the defence), declared: “1 believe 1 have a mission in this world.” Asked about receiving money, she retorted: “Are you conducting this case without a brief?” Lord Hewart: What has that to do with it? Mrs Lewis: Well, when people give me honest money there is no harm in accepting it. i_.ater, Airs Lewis said: “I always feel faint at the sight of a L>ournemouth policeman.” At the conclusion of Mrs Lewis’ case she rose from her seat and ©vclfiiuied in tearful tones, “Can 1 speak?” Lord Hewart took no notice. He held that the matter dealt with in the article was of public interest end that tho defence of ‘‘fair comment” was well lounded. An application for a stay of execution was refused.
