Cricket in the City

I POSITION IN SENIOR A DIVISION UNCHANGED CENTURY TO W. H. WILSON Cricket competitions in the city were continued in good weather on Saturday afternoon. In the senior A division, the matches commenced the previous week—th e first in the second round —were completed, wins being secured by Palmerston, Old Boys and United. The position of the teams in this competition is now as follows: Palmerston 18 points, Old Boys 13, United 11, City Bi, Y.M.C.A. 4£, Hight School 4. In the senior B and junior divisions a start was made with new games, four of these being staged at the Sports ground. Best batting contributions in the senior A matches were returned by S. McVicar (73 not out for City), Murchison (69 not out for Y.M.C.A.) and Pollitt (65 not out for United). Murchison also figured in the best bowling averages, dismissing four of Old Boys' batsmen for 46, while Cockery (Cityl secured four Palmerston wickets for 45. The United bowlers had a feast against High School who were routed for 47. In the senior B competition W. H. Wilson knocked up 115 for Combined Services against Kia Toa, while, bowling for Y.M.C.A. against Old Boys, Hornibrook took six for 17. Old Boys Notch Extra Point in Fighting Finish. Old Boys (207 and 69 for 4 wickets) secured a four-point win over Y.M.C.A. (68 and 207 for eight wickets, declared). On the opening day, Y.M.C.A. had first use of the wicket and were dismissed for 68, the drawing of stumps finding Old Boys with five down for 153. On Saturday Old Boys carried their score to 207. Murchison, with four for 46, was the most successful bowler. With Old Boys' bowling strength depleted through the absence of N. Oallichan, Y.M.C.A. had more success in their second strike. Murchison was in good form with the bat and put together an unbeaten 69, which included eleven boundary strokes. With Old Boys' first innings score equalled, Y.M.C.A. declared with eight down for 207. An hour was left for play, and Y.M.C.A. gambled on the possibility of being able to dismiss Old Boys for under 67, which would have given them a four-point win. Had Y.M.C.A. remained at the wickets, they faced a certain three-point loss. Old Boys, however, with a couple of minutes to spare, put on 69 for the loss of four wickets and thus gained a fourpoint win. Details:— OLD BOYS First Innings. On the opening day City made 86 in their first innings, and at stumps, Palmerston had scored 101 for the loss of two wickets. Moloney, who had been not out with 62 last week, was absent when play was resumed, owing to his being in Auckland for the Plunket Shield fixture. The rest of the side offered little opposition, and all were out for 143, Cockery taking four for 45. C. McVicar and S. McVicar opened City’s second strike. After contributing 5, the former had to retire through receiving a hard knock. G. Wheatley was dismissed for 6, and one wicket was down for 29. S. McVicar and Collis then became associated in a prolific partnership, which carried the score along to 140, when City declared in the hope that they might be able to dismiss Palmerston for less than 83 in the 30 minutes remaining for play, and thus secure a four-point win. S. Me Vicar’s 73 included ten fours, while Collis hit seven boundaries in his 47. City’s hope was a forlorn one, as when stumps were drawn, Palmerston had 55 on for the loss of two wickets. Palmerston thus won on the first innings. Details:— PALMERSTON First Innings. Robertson, lbw, b Nairn 22 Moloney, retired (absent) .... 62 M. Ongley, lbw, bC.
