Coronation Expectations Include Counterfeit Notes

LONDON, Jan. 13. Among the big fraud a.ttempts expected during the hectic weeks of the Coronation period, the counterfeit banknote will be the most difficult problem for the police. Counterfeiters are believed to be hoarding up their bogus notes—waiting for the big rush to ensure comparative safety. But traps are being laid. The Issue Department of the Bank of England will have the services of 20

to 30 women experts in forgery detection and the authorities will work in close co-operation with Scotland Yard as good as tbe fakes start arriving. Women are believed to be better than men—because of their greater sensitivity—in the detection of forged notes, which they run through their fingers one after the other at lightning speed. Several of these women are already at work, and their duties continue to grow more and more important. Whenever a forgery is detected the police are told at once, while the bank is stilL i tracing the history of the note as far back as possible.
