Fruit Preserving Factory Destroyed

DIBAS4TROUS FIRE AT MOTUEKA. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Lust Night. Thompson and Hill’s fruit preserving factory at Motueka was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday night, the loss amounting to several thousands of pounds. Tho operations of the factory consisted of jam-making, pulping, canning and evaporating fruit. It wa3 the only factory in New Zealand where apples were evaporated. If this portion of tho building is not speedily restored tho district will have to find a fresh market for thousands of cases of apples. A number of expensive machines in tho canning department wore damaged beyond repair. Indeed the only part of the plant which appeared to have escaped destruction was tho boiler. At tho height of the fire anrl .for many hours afterwards there were continual explosions from tins of fruit which were hurled into the air.
