Minor Accidents at Church Hill Deviation
NEED FOR TELEPHONE STRESSED. The "Times” Ashhurst correspondent reports that up to last Friday there had been a few minor accidents at the Church hill deviation works, though not of a very serious nature, the men concerned being able to carry on the work. Last week, however, G. Ikummond, of Ashhurst, was unfortunate enough to be injured on the right leg by a hand truck used for removing the spoil. After being attended to by a doctor, hS was 8 dvised that lie would not be able to resume duties for at least a month. This was tho most serious accident until last Friday forenoon when Mr. Saunders, of Palmerston North, was badly Injured in the legs by a fall of metal. The injured man was working on an Bft. face with several others when suddenly about a cubic yard of spoil broke away from the face and caught Saunders by the legs spinning him to the ground. Help was soon rendered tho injured man and ho was conveyed by car t the Public Hospital. It would appear a great , boon if , Public Works Department job imd ; qualified first aid man in attendance, and moreover, what appears more essen tial than all, is the need of a telephone on the job. If a really serious accidenl calling for a doctor or ambulance should happen at Church hill it necessitates a trip of nearly a milo to the nearest telephone.
