Japan’s Political And Trade Problems

SUBSIDISING SHIPPING. WOOL PURCHASE UPSETS BALANCE OF TRADE. Received Friday, 2 a.m. TOKIO, Feb. 4. A conference of all parties rejected the Government’s request for a notice of voluntary adjournment of the Diet owing to dissatisfaction with the composition of Cabinet. Consequently the Emperor prorogued the Diet till Wednesday next. Japanese shipping will receive a special subsidy of 900,000 sterling per year from the Ministry of Communications as part of an effort to increase merchant tonnage to 6,000,000 in five years. It will be devoted chiefly to freighters. Leading business men are urging tho Government to regulate trade with South Africa and tho Argentine, pointing out that owing to the extensive wool purchases becoming onesided they should direct the attention of South Africa and Argentine imposing restrictive measures against Japanese goods.
