Local Body Amalgamation

MINISTER FAVOURS CONFERENCE. The Dannevirke County Council it its January meeting passed a resolution in favour of a conference of local bodies iu the district being convened to consider the question of amalgamation, provided the Minister of Internal Affairs could be present. At yesterday’s monthly meeting the following communication was received from Hon. \V. E. Barry: — “I heartily commend the actioi which your council proposes to take ia convening a meeting of adjoining local authorities to discuss the question, a* this affords an opportunity for all interested parties to have a frank discussion of the possibilities of reform being achieved by means of voluntary amalgamation. I will be very pleased t i accede to the request of tho council to attcird the suggested conference, but at the moment 1 am unable to indicate definitely when it will bo possible for me to mako the visit. I will, however, let you know as early as possible of a convenient date." Cr. J. Castles: I see tho Minister is going to the South Island, and I suppose ho will como here later. The chairman (Cr. J. Peters): Yes. he is making a comprehensive tour. The letter was received.
