Worker Burned While Riding Horse
SUDDEN BURST OF FLAME. Per Press Association. WHAKATANE, Last Night. A man, Lionel Freeman,” 21, married residing at Matata, was severely burned on the hands and face through the explosion of sodium chlorate. He had been employed for some weeks on ragwort eradication on Patterson's estate near Matata. Last evening he was returning on horseback in company with a man named Peterson and was carrying a few pounds of sodium wrapped in a sugar bag on the front of the saddle when the sodium burst into flames. The explosion caused the horse to bolt and throw the rider into some fern at the roadside clear of the burning bag and contents but not before he had been badly burned. His coat ako naught fire but this was smothered by the fall. Peterson rode for assistance while the injured man walked a mile and a-half to the nearest house. He was taken in a truck to Whakatane Hospital where, it is reported, hie condition is satisfactory, |
