DUNGABVAN SCRATCHED FOR THE TARANAKI CUP MARTARA DEPARTS It was the intention of W. Pine to take Dungarvan, Cloudy Bay and Symcony through, to the Taranaki meeting, bat the programme has been amended and they will not come in till the Xlawera meeting. Meantime Dungarvan and also Dawning Light have been given a light physic. Awapuni's representation at New Plymouth will now be limited to Martara, Wild Flower, Benedictine and Forest Glow, the last named being due to come in later on the circuit. The quartette left for the scene of action yesterday morning and they were not asked to gallop before leaving. Martara, however, executed an excellent effort over a mile yesterday morning and the Martarma gelding should make a bold bid to aid his third success in open company. Wild Flower, while she may not be among the top flight of two-year-olds, falls but little short of it and, being a slightly gross typo, she promises to stand up to hard racing. Consequently, she might well go on improving. Benedictine has been displaying a fund of promise in his schooling efforts and, as the company is not exceptionally strong, the Peach Brandy gelding might well gather in some stake money despite the fact that it will be his first race for some considerable time. Fortst Glow will no doubt be benefited by racing. Little Galloping Attempted. There was little fast work attempted yesterday morning, although the track conditions were well nigh perfect, wiuie the flags were close in to the rails on the course proper. Round Score (C. Thomson) and Severe (W. J. Broughton), however, were associated in a six furlongs effort, the former revelling in his task. They ran the first three three furlongs in 39 2-5 sec., and six in 1.20 2-5. Gay Molly (Broughton), who is building up into quite an attractive type, was partnered by Aurora 's Love (D. Mansfield) over half a mile. Th« latter was slow away, but they were together at the three furlongs peg to run the last three in 38 2-ssec. Tail Light (Broughton), who is carrying more condition than previously, ran half a mile in company with Manawatu (J. Rae) on tho plough, the last three in 39see. Although last to move, Old Surrey (P. Rae) quickly ran up to the TractorButterscotch gelding (J. Rae) and the Peach Brandy—Miss Quarantine . colt (Broughton) to be a length in front at the post after running the three furlongs in 38sec. Riding Engagements. Riding engagements announced for the New Plymouth meeting are:—C. Thomson.—-Bazina, W. J. McDowell.—Benedictine. G. Tattersall.—Martara, Wild Flower. W. J. Broughton.—Taitoru, Eagle's Eye, Card Sharper, Bantry, Refresher. Change of Staples Patter and Black Fox, who carry tho colours of Mr W. A. Irons, have been transferred from L. Wilson ’a stable to J. H. Jefferd at Hastings. While Patter has given promise of developing into a useful mare, Black Fox has been disappointing as a racing proposition on the flat. Wilson has, however, already received one newcomer, Mr R. H. Holden, who originally had Wagner j at Awapuni, having sent the Siegfried- 1 Taleteller three-year-old filly over to him from Hawke's Bay. i Taumau, who has done all his racing under the supervision of E. W. Watson, was transferred to Mrs A. W. McDonald's stable on his return from Trentham where he won the highweight on the second day. Taumau is now out of acks and he may prove to be difficult to place unless he can be educated for the jumping ranks. He has plenty of size, but he is very wide spread behind and does not appear to be quite the ideal type for a jumper. PROM VARIOUS SOURCES Red Manfred has been put back into work again under J. Fryer at Hawera. <s> <3> ® The Melbourne Cup, which brought the owners of Wotan £7OOO in stake money, has placed Messrs Smith at the head of the winning owners' list in Victoria. If Wotan should win the Australian Cup, and a race or two at weight-for-age, he may bring his winnings in Australia within the region of £12,000. <3> ❖ Martara is engaged in the Taranaki Cup and he is also iD the Dunedin Cup the following week. Success at New Plymouth would render him liable to rehandicap for his southern engagement. <s> <B* <$- <S> Throe yearlings bought at the national salos have been placed under Mrs A. W. McDonald at Awapuni for their early education. They are Mr E. J. Watt's Helen colt, the Sahara filly, and the Episode colt, who is the property of Mr R. H. Lowry, Taihape. RACING FIXTURES. The star attraction of the opening day of the Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting, to bo held at New Plymouth on Thursday und Saturday of this week, will be the appearance of Wotan in the Flying Handicap. An assurance was given last week that Wotan would be a contestant in that race, and his acceptance for his firstday engagement should assure the general public that the Melbourne Cup winner would be on hand. When Wotan parades for the sprint on Thursday he should prove the greatest drawcard tho club has had since tho meeting of Gloaming and Desert Gold in the Taranaki Stakes dome 18 years ago, states an exchange. Wotan figures as one of the most sensational winners in the history of the Melbourne Cup, and the fact that he has not started since makes him a wonderful attraction for the general public. In the 61 years of the existence of the Taranaki Jockey Club, this will be the first time the club has had the honour of the presence of a Melbourne Cup winner racing at its meeting. Wotan, of course, could hardly be considered a possibility over six furlongs, but for the vast majority of people it will be their only chance in a lifetime to see a Melbourne Cup winner racing, especially one who sebred under such sensational circumstances as did Wotan.
