Ten hours after the American freighter Meanticut, leaking badly and rolling helplessly in a great swell in mid-Atlantic sent an 5.0.5., the Holland-American freighter Edam reported that Bhe was standing by but would not attempt to take off the crow before daylight. Previously the captain of the Meanticut radioed that he was considering abandoning ship. The position was reported as 250 miles north-west of the Azores in the regular lane between the Gulf ports and the English Channel.
