Dannevirke News

There was another slight decrease in the unemployment registrations in Dannevirke during last month, the number on the No. 5 scheme comprising 31 in the borough and 25 in the county, a total of 56 compared with 58 for December. There were, however, 68 on sustenance, as against 54 in December. Eleven men, as against 12 previously are employed on excavation work at the Dannevirke Hospital in connection with the ew building scheme. Sustenance figures for the various months of last year were: January 42, February 42, March 45, April 47, May 47, June 43, July 107, August 132, September 119, October 65, November 56, December 51. The crcket competitions were continued in the Southern Hawke’s Bay Association’s territory on Saturday in sunny but boisterous weather. The matches in the senior grade completed the first scries in the second round, which commenced the previous Saturday. Woodville secured a win ovor Dannevirke and Old Boys forced an outright win over Phoenix in an oxciting race against the clock. A team from tho Hinemoa Tennis Club journeyed to Takapau over the week-end to play a match with the Takapau Tennis Club. The games were played under ideal conditions and proved most enjoyable, Hinemoa winning by 16 matches to 8 matches.
