Acclimatisation Matters

PALMERSTON NORTH COMMITTEE MEETS. The committee of the Palmerstou North branch of the Wellington Acch matisation Society met on Thursday evening, Mr R. W. Priest presiding. Also present were Messrs E. J. Matthews, 11. W. Scott, F. Haley, E. E. Ward, W. 11. Hosking, W. H. Seward, H. Lane and W. R. Procter (secretary). The chairman, in referring to questions arising out of the minutes of the previous meeting, intimated that in regard to the Tararua Tramping Club's desire to have the Tararua area declared a national park, the matter was being closely watched by the committee. Mr Priest said that the proposed new rearing pond would probably be constructed at Musterton, and that it would be the most suitable place for it, as the fry would have better conditions in which to develop. In discussing the subject of game licenses which had arisen at the last meeting of the council in Wellington, Mr Priest said that if a license-holder in one district wished to shoot in another district, he could do so by paying a small sum and receiving an endorsement. The subject had, however, not progressed past the elementary stage. It was stated that the council's fish committee had been authorised to liberate up to 1000 fingerlings in December, with a view to determining a policy for future liberations. The secretary asked the chairman what steps were being taken regarding the proposed visit to the game farm. No suggestions were brought forward by members and so the secretary offered to interview the ranger, —ascertain a suitable date and inform the committee. The Wellington council, it was stated, was favourably disposed to the clause dealing with the North Island optional game license providing the license fee is increased from £5 to £9.
