Hastings Sewerage Scheme

LAYING OF PIPES WITHIN A FORTNIGHT (Special to u Times") HASTINGS, Jan. 29. The contractors 'for tho Hastings borough sewerage scheme, W. Ste- : venson and Sons, Ltd., of Bulls, hope to make a start within the next fortnight with the actual laying of the five and a-half miles of pipes, the main part of the I Hastings borough’s £43,600 scheme, j j Inquiries made by the “Herald- j ! Tribune" to-day elicited the inf or- j mation that good progress is being j made with the manufacture of the j pipes, which are being produced by, l | the Hume Pipe Co., Ltd. at Hast- 4 ings. The pipe-laying contractors are waiting until a sufficient supi ply of these pipes is in hand to j enable them to proceed with thi3 j 1 contract without having to be de- , layed by a shortage of pipes* and it is anticipated that within the • fortnight the number of pipes produced will enable the pipelaying to be carried cut without a break. I Each pipe has to be cured for a month before it can bo used, and as ►he contractors have a large quantity >f valuable machinery employed on the work, they naturally do not wish to lave their plant lying idle while they iwait further supplies of pipe's. For the 300 feet of waterway crossing the old bed of the Ngaruroro at tho railway bridge, concrete piles are being driven to carry the pipe-line, and steady progress is also being made here. Owing to the fact that the piles ire having to be driven a greater distance than was originally anticipated to secure a firm foundation, it has been found necessary to increase the length of some of the piles, but the work has not been delayed. In addition to this there are a number of minor structures to be made across and through creeks, and at -the mouth of the sewer, which, will be between the mouths of tho Ngaruroro and Tukituki rivers, at East Clive. It will be at these sections that the pipeline will be visible, as the rest of the line will be underground.
