The Dannevirke Show
ABOUT THE CATTLE CLASAS All breeds of cattle are catered for at the annual show of the Dannevirke A. and P. Association, to be held on February 9 and 10. In Aberdeen Angus a challenge cup valued at 10 guineas has been donated by the N.Z. Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders' Association, for the best animal in the breed, the cup to be won three times in succession or five times at intervals before becoming the property of any one exhibitor. There is the stipulation that there must be at least 10 entries in the section, not necessarily from 10 different breeders. In addition the Breeders' Association donates cash prizes for yearling male, yearling female and two-year-old heifer, first £1 la and second 10s 6d, in each of these classes. There is a perpetual challenge cup for most points in the Ayrshire section, while the Jersey breed is particularly well catered for, there being the Dannevirke and District Jersey Cattle Club's 20 guinea perpetual challenge cup for moat points; the Annie Holden perpetual challenge cup, valued at 14 guineas, for most points, competition for this being limited to members of the Dannevirke District Jersey Cattle Club; also a perpetual challenge cup for most points in classes open to breeders in the Hawke’s Bay provincial district. In addition to the cash prizes of the Dannevirke A. and P. Association the N.Z. Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association and the Dannevirke District Jersey Cattle Club donate substantial additional cash prizes in fourteen other classes. This section is most comprehensive and all breeders and owners of this class of cattlo should find it most interesting. Fresh interest has been given to the Friesian classes by the addition of three special prizes, as follows;—A points prize of £2 10s in purebred Friesians exhibited by residents of the H. B. provincial district; a trophy to be given by local breeders to the local exhibitor gaining most points iu Friesians on three occasions; and special cash prizes for heifer calved since July Ist, 1935, to be exhibited but not necessarily bred by a resident of the Hawke’s Bay provincial district, the breeder’s name to be stated. In Milking Shorthorns there is a challenge cup for most points and there are special prizes for champion bull and cow, both senior and junior. There is a challenge cup for most points in grade dairy cattle. The Boys’ and Girls’ Calf-Rearing Club has three separate classes, and there is a challenge cup for heifer calf calved between August Ist and September 30, 193(5, to be judged on dairy type. In fat cattle there is a challenge cup far most points in two-year-old baby beef, male or female. Animals competing for the cup must be fed and judged in the ring. Other breeds not enumerated above are also catered for, cash prizes being given by the association. There are so many features in the cattle section that consultation of the catalogue is essential. There is a special schedule this year for the Kennel Club’s show, held in conjunction with the A. and P. Show, and application should be made for ono without delay. General entries close on January 26 with the secretary, P.O. Box 38, Dannevirke.
