Melbourne University Women’s College

The University "Women’s College being constructed at Parkville, Melbourne is gradually nearing completion, though a great deal still remains to be done° before the beginning of the first term in March, (says an exchange). The roofing is nearly finished and the rooms on the ground floor, whore the dining hall is situated, are being plastered. The furnishing committee is hard at work, and interesting schemes for the furnishing of the students’ rooms—each student will be allotted a bed-sitting room —have been formulated. A modern note, without rcsourco to extreme, is being struck in the furnishing schemes. Natural oak has been selected for the wooden furniture. A neat little desk with, rows of book shelves and drawers, and a wide working space, is being placed in each room, which will also contain a wardrobe and simple chest of drawers, made in the style of lowboy, with a plain, flat top. A “folk-weave” fabric, resembling a hand-woven material, has been chosen for the curtains and the covers of the divan beds, while the working arm chairs are cushioned to match. The principal, Miss S. J. Williams, will arrive on February 8, by which time the bursar-housekeeper will have been appointed. Nearly 80 applications have been received for this office, and the appointments sub-committee is busy interviewing applicants. The college is fortunate in being able to start its career by offering three scholarships, one valued at £6O a year and another at £4O. The amount of the third has not been specified. These scholarships should be of special importance to country students, and the college council is receiving applications from students both for the scholarships and for full residence at the college this year. There will be accommodation for 20.
