From Our Own Correspondent. Personal Visitors to Palmerston North for the Highland Pipe Band contest on Saturday were Drum-Major J. R. Nairn, of the llawera Band, and Mrs Nairn. It will be remembered by those interested that the Hawera Pipe Band was 'successful in winning tho Dominion B grade championship held in Wanganui last year. Mr and Mrs Nairn accompanied by Miss Doreen Nairn, spent the week-end with Mrs Nairn’s sister, Mrs J. A. Cooksley, Opiki. Mrs G. J. Wildo .and family are away on holiday. Miss Betty Mout, of the nursing staff ot the Waipukurau Hospital, was a recent guest of Mr and Mrs H. Barrow. An Otaki visitor to the district, In the person of Miss Ruth Young, spent the week-end with her parents. Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, accompanied by Mr C. Hunter, M.P., and deputations representing the Opiki settlers and the Kairanga County Council, made a tour of inspection through the Makerua highway on Tuesday. We must congratulate Messrs J. D. Aitchison. V. Claridge and G. J. Wilde for their able championship of a good cause—that of obtaining a new public structure to replace the Rangitane toll bridge. Miss Phyllis Tern', of Buckley road, Shannon, is staying with her aunt, Mrs Sames. Mr O. Niederer, organiser for the Farmers’ Union, has been visiting Opiki and the surrounding districts. Keen disappointment was felt when it was heard that the Wellington Education Board at its meeting recently, deferred the question of a bus to convey the children of the district to the Opiki school until a later meeting. As far as it is known, only one tender had been received for tho service. Mrs L. Gaskin has returned to her home in Eketahuna, after visiting her daughter, Mrs V. Claridge.
