Surprises in Auckland Tennis Semi-finals

TWO DOMINION CHAMPIONS ELIMINATED Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. Two big surprises occurred in the semi-finals of the Auckland tennis championships. M. T. Wilson, a local player, defeated D. G. Coombe, the Wellington and Dominion champion, in three straight sets, scoring a welldeserved success. In the ladies’ singles Margaret Beverley, the 18-year-old Matamata player, eliminated Dulcie Nieholls, also a New Zealand titleholder, in three sets. Miss Beverley outplayed her opponent, leading 5—2 in the first set. She was attacked with nerves but thereafter recovered, winning the next two sets.

VINES AGAIN BEATS PERRY Received Thursday, 11.25 p.m. CHARLOTTE (North Carolina), Jan. 28. Vines defeated Perry, 3—6, 6 —J. G—4. The American’s powerful service was the greatest factor in Perry’s defeat. NEW TENNIS STARS IN AUSTRALIA BROMWICH VANQUISHES CRAWFORD Received Thursday, Midnight. SYDNEY, Jan. 28. In the Australian tennis championships semi-finals of the men’s singles Bromwich beat Crawford, 6—l, 7 —9, 6 — 4, B—6;8 —6; McGrath beat Hopman, G—4, G—l, 7—5. In a spectacular match lasting 2.£ hours young Bromwich triumphed over the Davis Cup skipper Crawford owing to his consistency and better condition. Crawford was extremely tired at the finish. Bromwich displayed a unique fighting spirit and had the crowd on its tiptoes. He serves with his right hand, drives with his left hand and uses a doublehanded grip on the rightside. The meeting of the two youngsters McGrath and Bromwich in the final on Saturday is awaited with great interest. McGrath found Hopman below his form of yesterday when he beat Quist.

In the women’s doubles semi-finals Misses T. Coyne and N. Wynne beat Misses V. Selwin and A. Hattersley, 6—4—(} } 6 —3; Mesdames Hopman and Westcott beat Misses J. Hartigan and M. Blick, 6—4, 6 —3.
