Greatest Emergency Since World War
POLICE WITHOUT SLEEP FOR POUR DAYS. Received Wednesday, Midnight. NEW YORK, Jan. 27. Mayor Miller, of Louisville, has sent out a radio plea to the mayors of all 1 largo cities to send 500 policemen to relievo thoso who have been on duty for four days without sleep. He explained that tho city is under State martial law, not Federal, so that a regular army detachment cannot relieve the police. He expressed confidence that the request will bring an immediate response. Philadelphia is prepared to send 100 City and 100 State. Police by special train and 'planes. Other cities are also co-operating. Admiral Grayson has announced that the Red Cross quota is now 10,000,000 dollars which he termed the bare minimum needed. He said the flood presented the greatest emergency the nation and Red Cross had faced since the world war.
