Mrs Gambrill Finalist in Open Event
DOMINION TOURNEY NEARLY CLOSED CHISTCHURCH, Jan. 26. A full days play on Monday on fast lawns and in glorious summer weather enabled the New Zealand croquet championships to be advanced to the semi-final and final stages of the principal events. It is expected that the tournament will be concluded to-day. Results:— Open Championship. Third round: A. Gibbs beat Mrs McLennan, 26—0, 23 —26, 26—13. Semifinal: Mrs Gambrill beat H. A. Penn, 26-24, 20-2; A. Gibbs beat H. Stratton, 26-19, 26-8. Women’s Championship. First life, semi-final: Mrs W. Corbet beat Mrs Frost, 20-17. Final: Mrs W. Corbet beat Mrs Cole, 20-4. Second life, third round: Mrs W. Corbet beat Mrs Watkins, 20-9. Semifinal: Mrs J. Palmer beat Mrs E. A. Smith, 20-15; Mrs W. Corbet beat Mrs F. Whibley, 26-6. A Fine Exhibition. In the third round of the open chain pionship Mrs. Gambrill, playing beautiful croquet, defeated Mrs. Palmer22l,6 —1, 26—5. In the first game Mrs. Gambrill went to three back with the first ball and with the second ball sho went from the first hoop to the stick. Mrs. Palmer missed the long shot and Mrs. Gambrill finished. Still playing easily Mrs. Gambrill in the second game did five single peels in the turn. Mrs. Palmer shot in, making two hoops, when she broke. Without allowing her opponent another shot, Mrs. Gambrill ended the match. It was a fine exhibition of croquet. Mrs. Gambrill Beaten. Mrs. Gambrill, superbly as she hud played against Mrs. Palmer in the open championship, went down before the steadiness of Mrs. Cole in the women's championship. In her game with Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Gambrill shot in and went round to the back, when Mrs. Cole got in, breaking, however at tho first hoop. Again Mrs. Gambrill got in, but failed at the first hoop, Mrs. Cole picking up the ball and going to four back. Mrs. Gambrill, with a lift shot, failed to shoot iu. Her opponent hit with the red ball round to the fifth hoop, wiring herself from her partner ball. Mrs. Gambrill picked up the shot and again failed at the first hoop, when Mrs. Cole shot in and finished the match 20—9.
In the first game between Mrs Gainbrill and H. A. Penn, the latter started going to penultimate. Mrs Gambrill followed him, but failed at three back. Penn hit in, going to the peg with the backward ball. Mrs Gambrill, who was shooting well, again got control, going also to the peg, but she failed to peg out her opponent's ball. Penn then took possession and made the penultimate, but missed a short roquet. Mrs Gambrill accomplished th© peg-out and finished the game, 20 —24.
In the second game, Penn hit tho tice, but after establishing a four-ball break broke at No. 2, letting in Mrs Gambrill, who went to rover. Penn who had several shots, failed to hit in and Mrs Gambrill gradually worked her clip round, finishing at 222.6 —2.
