RANGIWAHIA The January meeting was to havo been held at Mrs Frankhauser's, but owing to unsettled weather had to be held in the hall as usual. Mrs Boshier presided over a very good attendance including a number of visitors. Members were asked to bring parcels to the February meeting for a treasure chest for the inmates of the Porirua Hospital. It was decided to enter in the special Institute class at tho Feilding Show’, provided enough entries are forthcoming. For the February meeting it is hoped to havo Miss Grant present, and a flower show organised by the garden circle will bo held in conjunction with the Institute meeting. Impromptu speeches proved very interesting and in some cases most amusing. Several members aso gave impressions of the district's jubilee Day. Mrs Guthrie intimated having sent a gift of a tea waggon and half a dozen afternoon tea cups, saucers and plates, to Mrs C. Deihl, from the women of the district, Mesdames W. and S. Deihl returning grateful thanks on behalf of Mrs C. Deihl. A guessing competition was won by Mrs D. Thompson. The monthly competitions were for sweet peas, and coloured embroidery, the winners being: Mrs McMillan 1, Mrs Jones 2, and Miss P. Reilly 1, respectively. Hostesses for the February meeting w'ill be: Mesdames Jones x Jewell, Kreger, D. Martin, Miss Kreger. Mrs Backer a special hostess to prepare and clear the hall. Competitions will be for a Maderia cake and a shoulder spray. Arts and Crafts Circle. A meeting of members interested was held at Mrs Say well's recently, when nearly twenty members were present and expressed their desire to form a circle. Another meeting will bo held in the near future when Mrs F. Bililnghurst will further instruct members in tray making. Garden Circle. Tho Garden Circle met at Mrs Guthrie’s residence last Tuesday afternoon, when one of tho few beautiful summer days tempted a large number of circle members and others out. Mrs Guthrie’s home is very prettily situated and all present thoroughly enjoyed walking round her flower garden and also through the shrubbery. Mrs Guthrie occupied the chair for the meeting, the main business being to complete arrangements for the flower show*. The show will be on much the same lines as last year. Prizes will be picked from a bran tub (members to supply parcels), also there havo been a number of special prizes donated. A letter was received from Mrs Haythorne, intimating that in the event of the circle visiting any florist's garden in Palmerston North, she would be pleased to entertain the members to lunch. Mrs Haythorne was w’amily thanked for her invitation. Several new members w r ere welcomed to the circle. Competition winners wero Mesdames McMilan and Tompkins. Mesdames W. G. Beard and F. Billinghurst delighted with elocutionary and musical items. It was decided to hold the next meeting at Mrs Blackler’s garden. On behalf of tho Institute, Mrs Boshier thanked Mrs Guthrie for entertaining the circle and also for a most enjoyable afternoon. FOXTON Mrs J. Symon (president) presided over the monthly meeting of the Fox ton Women's Institute, at which there was a fair attendance of members present. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames F. Procter, C. H. Sy mons, Fitt, Parker and E. Popple. Arrangements in connection with the Group meeting which is to be held in the Town Hall on Thursday, March 18,
commeucing at 10.30 a.m., were discussed and finalised. It was decided that the arts and crafts stall be iu charge of Mesdames D. Brooks and G. Walls. A demonstration iu pottery is to be given by Mrs McCorkinclale and the play, “The Lovely Miracle,” will be presented by the drama circle. During the afternoon two much appreciated items were given by Mrs E. Ebbet, who played a pianoforte solo, and Mrs L. J. Chittenden, who contributed a humorous elocutionary item. Miss Grant gave a very interesting talk on a trip to Washington and this was greatly appreciated by the members. The competition for the weed basket was won by Mrs Devonshire. At tho conclusion of afternoon tea which was served by the hostesses, the meeting was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. APITI. The next meeting of the Apiti W.I. is to be held in Mrs. W. McKay's garden. The competitions are for plain scones and the best laundered tablecloth. The flower competitions are (1) best decorative bowl of dahlias; (2) best collection, not more than six dahlias; (3) best cactus dahlia. Special prizes have been donated for 2 and 3. The quarterly market stall will be in charge of
Mrs. Arthur Prince and Miss Peggy Swift and there w r ill be a rag bag collection for funds. A demonstration of smocking will be given by three of the younger members, Mrs. J. Cawood and Misses Pettigrew and Madgo McKay, and those wishing to do this work should bring the necessary materials. Mesdames J. Mapson, J. O’Hagan, Tom Osborne and J. Pettigrew are the hostesses.
