LARGE SUM INVOLVED Per Press Association. GISBORNE, Last Night. Seventeen charges involving over £I3OO in forgery and theft were admitted by William McKinnon, mercantile broker, aged 44, before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., to-day. Evidence was given that the accused induced people, including prominent men and a working widow, to advance money for the purchase of fencing posts from North Auckland and the South Island, stating in several cases that the receipts would come from the venders. Witnesses were shown receipts after a lapse of a few weeks. Other witnesses were given receipts by

the accused. In statements to Detective Belton, the accused admitted forging receipts and using, the money for betting. He was trying to recoup losses which at one Wellington meeting totalled £BOO. The accused was committed for sen* tence at Gisborne.
