“Boy Bishop” Chosen
QUAINT CEREMONY REVIVED A ceremony which had ceased since the days of Queen Elizabeth in the old Kent borough of New Romney was revived when, on the eve of St. Nicholas's Day, a “boy bishop" of Romney was elected. A large crowd watehed while the choir boys of St. Nicholas’s Church chose one of tlieir comrades, Nicholas Smith, aged 12, as the bishop. The election took place in the churchyard at the tomb of John Tuppenny, where in centuries past the mayors of the town were elected. Afterwards the boy bishop was installed by the vicar of New Romney/ who robed him with a coat of gold, with mitre, and crosier. A procession through the town followed, with the choir carrying torches and singing hymns. Tho boy bishop had previously appointed his brother John as his chaplain and other boys as deacons and acolytes. On St. Nicholas's Day the boy bishop, in his robes of office, attended evensong in the old parish church.
