Woman Injured When Lamp Explodes
ACCIDENT AT WAIHEKE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 25. Severe burns to her neck, chest and arms were suffered by a widow, Mrs Edith Rita Johnson, aged 33, of 14 rStanmore Road, Grey Lynn, yesterday afternoon, when a spirit lamp exploded in the pantry of the Onetangi Hotel, Waiheke Island. The lamp was being lit by a visitor to the hotel when tho accident occurred. Mrs Johnson was engaged in preparations for tea and was near the table on which the lamp was standing. Owing to the direction of the draught m the room she suffered the full force of tho explosion. The injured woman was conveyed by bus a distance of four miles to Ostend and was taken on board a launch which immediately left for Auckland. A St. John ambulance met the launch and the woman was taken to the Auckland Hospital. Her condition last night was reported to be not serious.
