Fooling Fines to Pay Inspectors
MOTORISTS AND ROAD MANNERS When being congratulated last evening by a deputation on the of his road safety campaign, the Minister of Transport, Hon. R. Semple, took the opportunity of explaining further steps ho proposed taking by way of legislation shortly to lessen still more the number of accidents and fatalities and teach motorists road manners. He stated that his proposal was for the Transport Department to take over traffic control in all towns of 6000 inhabitants and under, fees received and fines imposed being devoted to employing inspectors (not pimps, he added) whose duty it would be to educate motorists. Safety on the road depended a lot on not terrorising drivers but on training them. When a man was lined it was proper that his fine should go towards making life on the roads safer. There was no reasonable objection to the pooling of fines and fees for such a purpose and so make the roads safe. The Minister stated that he was extremely grateful to the Automobile Associations for the co-operation they had given him and the work they were doing on the highways was wonderful.
