Paragraphs About People and Events Hawke’s Bay are next on the list for a Hawke Cup challenge match and at the meeting of the Manawatu Cricket Association last evening, it was resolved to offer February 26 and 27 and March 1 as the dates for the game. ' Charles George Wilmott Palmer, a second offender in drunkenness, who when arrested in the Square on January 18 showed signs of having consumed methlyated spirits, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court for sentence yesterday. As he had been remanded in custody for a week, the Magistrate, Mr J. L. Stout, convicted accused and discharged him. <s> «s><s> <S> “We are not perfect; we are liable to make mistakes the same as cver v \ody else, ” intervened Hon. R. Bcmplo last night when a speaker for a deputation assured him that no criticism of the Labour Government was intended. * ‘ They tell us that there was only one perfect man on this earth, and men crucified Him. I don’t want to run any risk of that,” said Mr. Semple. <S> <B> <s> <§> A remand until Monday next was granted yesterday at the request of the police when William Frederick Holland, a labourer and factory hand, was charged with obtaining credit by fraud, it was alleged that he obtained board and lodgings valued at £5 from Lawrence Clifford Morgan by falsely representing that he was a porter employed by New Zealand Railways. Other charges were ponding, it was stated.
In the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North yesterday, Mr J. L. Btout, S.M., adjourned until Monday next the claim filed by Leu Smith, musician, of Palmerston North, against Sonia Chostiakoff and Vincent Ryan. Plaintiff alleges wrongful dismissal anil claims £2lO. An application on behalf of Auckland solicitors to have the case adjourned until March 20 was opposed by Mr G. I. McGregor, solicitor for plaintiff. The Court ordered an adjournment until February 1.
At the meeting of the Manawatu Cricket executive last evening, the chairman (Mr M. A. Ungley) reported that Messrs Goldfinch and Cousins had donated to the Association a steelshafted bat which had been autographed by the members of the M.C.C. and Australian teams which had taken part in the second test match at Sydney. it was resolved to forward the association’s thanks to the donors and that the bat should be disposed of by competition, the terms to be arranged later.

Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., said he had considered the case and was of the opinion that Scott needed some form of discipline. He did not propose to sentence accused to hard labour, but would sentenco him to eighteen months reformative detention on each of the indictable offences, the terms to be concurrent. On other charges he would be convicted and discharged. An order was made for the return of all stolen property.
