Humps Wool Out on His Back
FARMER ASKS MINISTER FOR TRACK. Declaring that for want of proper access to his land he was faced with the alternative of either driving his sheep out to get shorn or humping his wool out on his back to the nearest road three-quarters of a mile away, Mr L. B. Green, farming on the Iludhin*.* ranges behind Raumai, waited on Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works’ last evening, asking for a proper track. Ho had asked the County Council to do something but could get no satisfaction. Mr. Semple's It is a terrible thing to expect a man to hump wool out on his’ back these days. Mr. A. E. Acheson, departmental engineer, said there was a grant on the estimates for the track, but the trouble was the county would not maintain it. The Minister: Could you sledge your wool outf Mr. Green: I haven't been able to get a horse out for the last two months. The Minister said it would be useless the department spending money on the track if the County Council would not maintain it and the track went back to undergrowth. At times he came across county councillors who adopted that attitude and he didn't know what to do with them. Mr. Semple said the Government would do its part if the County Council would do theirs. He would see that the County Council was written to immediately on the subject. The council couldn't be forced but the department could make it very difficult for them. Air. Green was a ratepayer and should be given some consideration.
Mr. Green was supported in his request by Mr. E. Kerrigan.
