21st Birthday Merrily Celebrated at Makino

The coming of age of Mr Douglas Hills aroused considerable interest in the district and in response to the invitation of his parents, Mr and Mrs W. E. Hills of “Highland Park,” well on towards 200 friends gathered at their home on Saturday night to celebrate the event. A bright carnival appearance had been given the ball-room with blue and primrose streamers festooned from end to end and side to side of the ceiling, shaded lights to tone and a multitude of rainbow tinted balloons. Pink Irish roses and nasturtions lent charm and colour to both the hall and card rooms.

A progressive euchre tournament of which Mr Drummond MpGregor was in charge provided much entertainment for the older of the guests while the younger ones danced and played games with all the zest demanded by such a special occasion. There was a professional musician to play for dancing and Mrs P. R. Simpson contributed a fine extra. Messrs W. D. R. Baker and J. Lamberton (Pahiat.ua) who were joint M's.C. carried out their many duties most efficiently. Two tap dances by Miss Gloria Reid of Hamilton, and several boy's choruses were very much enjoyed. There were over 40 entrants in the euchre tournament and the ladies' first prize was won by Mrs J. N. Cumings who tied with Mrs Drummond McGregor and was successful in the play off Mrs Harold Gray, of Colyton, secured the ladies' sealed award. Messrs J. Nairn, A. E. Matheson and L. Northcott (Colyton) tied for the men's first prie which in the play off went to the former and Mr A. Shalders was tho winner of the sealed. A stick game was won by Mr Don Lamberton and another novelty game by Mr Harvey Brazer. Miss Peggy Matheson and Mr C. Petersen carried off the prizes in th> mystery train waltz and Miss Vera Petersen and Mr Gordon Gavigan those in the Monto Carlo fox-trot. There was a second Monte Carlo dance and in this Miss Gloria Reid and Mr Neil Lawson were the lucky ones. Delicious icecreams and a sumptuous supper were provided by Mr and Mrs Hills and the toast of their son was proposed by Mr W. D. R. Buker and drunk with musical honours. Mr Baker, jnr., also presented the proverbial gold key to Mr Douglas Hills who made a suitably reply. The very largo and delicious birthday cake which had been made by Mrs Hills was decorated -with 21 kewpies tied with ribbons to match the decorations in the ballroom.

Streamer and balloon dances brought tho fun of this outstandingly happy evening to a climax and when the time all too speedily came to say their goodbyes, the guests formed a great ring round Mr Douglas to sing “Auld Lang Syne” before rendering the National Anthem.

The congratulatory telegrams and wonderful array of birthday presents were evidence of tho popularity of Mr Douglas Hills, whose coming-of-age will always be remembered as one of the jolliest evenings ever held in Makino.

Mrs Hills received her visitors, wearing a gown of wine maroeain trimmed with beige, her mother, Mrs S. Gray, of Feilding, wore black and white figured maroeain, and her daughter, Mrs Drummond McGregor, was in floral crepe of orange toning relieved with navy blue.
