Insurgents Abandon Direct Methods LOYALISTS SUPERIOR IN HOUSE TO-HOUSE FIGHTING. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 7 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 23. The Telegraph’s special correspondent says the insurgents have abandoned their attempt to take Madrid by direct attack and are. now concentrating on surroundi**g the capital which at present has unhampered communications eastward and north-eastward. The change in tactics is due to the lessons of the recent fighting showing that the Government forces are superior in house-to-house fighting but can be outmanoeuvred in the open country. MADRID S WORST BOMBARDMENT. BAIN OF BOMBS CAUSES GREAT DAMAGE. r Received Sunday, 10.30 p.m. MADRID, Jan. 23. The city suffered the worst bombardment throughout tho siege. Shells rained on the capital at frequent intervals throughout the day. There were many casualties and buildings were greatly damaged while numerous fires raged. GERMAN BATTLESHIP HELPS IMMIGRANTS. ALLEGATIONS BY LOYALISTS. Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. • VALENCIA, Jan. 23. A communique alleges that the German battleship Graf Spee appeared on the horizon at dawn. Shortly afterwards four insurgent seaplanes appeared and dropped two loads of bombs on the aerodrome at Roquetas near Almeira. They later alighted alongside the Graf Spee which hauled them aboard.
