Horses for Ashhurst
FINAL TRIALS AT AWAPUNI. With the majority of trainers away at Trentham, there was a light programme at Awapuni yesterday, the horses with engagements at Ashhurst attracting chief interest. The course proper, with the flags well out from the rails, was available for fast work, and the going could not have been better. The weather was fine and calm. First out on the track was Black Fox, who, with R. Chisholm in the saddle, sprinted five furlongs in 1.7, not being pushed over the final bit. Kitty Quinn (W. J. McDowell) was partnered with Manawatu (Chisholm) and a Tractor gelding (McLaughlin) in a flutter over half a mile. Kitty Quinn was away a shade in front of the others and she stayed in front to beat Manawatu by about a length. The time was not so bad and Kitty Quinn appears to bo in good nick for her venture over the hurdles at Ashhurst. Alan McDouald, who was to have piloted her to-day, will not be able to sport silk for some time because the injury to his shoulder, sustained on Tuesday morning when Kitty Quinn slipped and fell with him, is more serious than was at first anticipated, the bone in the right arm having been cracked near the socket. The injury is serious enough to put most people into bed but it has not done that to Alan McDonald, who is as tough as they make 'em. Alan, though strapped up and bandaged in all directions, was at Trentham for the first day of the Wei-, lington races. He was one of the firs at Awapuni yesterday morning and later he was to leave for the yearling sales at Trentham. To-day he intends to be at the Ashhurst races.
Bodyline, who will carry the No. 7 saddle cloth in the Pohangina Handicap, was sprinted half a mile with Chisholm up. He began smartly and completed the distance in 52 2-ssecs. The little fellow looks fit and he should be capable of running a good race to day. Pango (D. Mansfield) was galloped a mile and after a slow beginning he quickly found his balance to cut the first three furlongs out in 40. He was picked up by Forest Glow (Parks) at the half-mile and finished his task nicely in 1.48, the last three furlongs taking 41. Catalogue (Chisholm) scampered over half a mile in 51 1-5, requiring 38 1-5 for the last three furlongs. Hunting Lodge (D. Mansfield) galloped six furlongs on her own and after taking 39 for the first three, she completed in 1.21, being clpcked to run the last five in 1.8. Round Score (D. Mansfield) was given a similar task, though it was intended that it should be over only five furlongs. He hopped away short of the six and was going well when he passed the 5£ furlongs barrier. He reached the three furlongs in 20 1-5 and completed the journey in 1.20 3-5. He looks well ( and he will be ridden by J. Forsyth in the Ashhurst Cud.
