PETROL EXPLOSION

EIGHT MEN KILLED. BRITISH STEAMER ON FIRE. CAPETOWN, Feb. 11. A terrible petrol explosion occurred on board the British steamer Homeford in Buffalo Harbour, East London to-day. Eight men were killed. An immense sheet of flame rose above the ship, and vast quantities of metal and sugar were hurled great distances. The crew fought tho fire with tho ship’s equipment, and some thrilling acts of heroism, worthy of tho best traditions of tho mercantile marine, wore witnessed. The flames were eventually got under control. The Homoford was a .British mystery ship in the war. She was built in 1918 by Smith’s Dock Company at Middlesbro’ and is owned by tho Boadon Liao.
