THE AWAHURI BRIDGE.
A epecial meeting of the M»n»watu Road Board was held this morning to coasider matters' relating to the Awahuri Bridge. Present.— the Chairman. (J&. M. Snelson,) ■md Messrs Edwards, Sly 7 and Mathieson. Telegrams were read from Mr D. H. Macarihur, M.H.E., detailing the actiou he had taken m the matter and suggesting the desirability of at once arranging for making application for the money, reqoie I, under he Koads and Bii Iges Construction Act. Plans of the proposed additions, &c.,, w#re also produced. It was staled m reference to -these, that the Cfoyernment Engineer, had iuggested that the Bridge should also be raised 2 feet higher than at present. This however would necessitate a large expenditure, and the Chairman suggested tfrat the engineer, & r Armstrong, should confer with the County Engineer, Mr Stewart, and modify the plans to suit the sum which had be-'n applied for, ; viz., £750. ,: After discussion the following resolution wag carnei : — That tbe Engineer of the Manawaiu County Council be invited to eoniult with Mr Armstrong, and tbat they visit the .Awahuri Bridge .without delay and ;harid: in'tothe Manawatu Road Board a report of the additions necessaiy to be done, 1 and, if advisable, amend the plans m accordance with the instructions suggested, m reference to the question of how the money required — £1110 — was to be levied, opinions vwere expressed that it should be paid m proportion by each ward, the work being one which benefited the whole district.
