DEATH OF A THOROUGHBRED.
Our sporting readers will regret to learn that Mr T. H. Caverhill's thoroughbred mare Heatherbell, t>y Daydawn, died on JMday last. The circumstances surroundingher death are rather peculiar — so peculiar m fact that a rewaid of £5 is now offered by Mr Caverhill for informa* tion relating to it. The mare together with a foal dropped two months ago, was running iv a paddock belong to Mr J. R. ForsterPratt, on the Tiritea and on Friday morning she was discovered m a very exhausted condition, covered with dry perspiration and also with a saddle mark plainly visible. The mare had not been ridden for eight months, and it is supposed some one remoTed her from the paddock and literally rode heir to d eath . After the death of the mare Mr Caverhill had a post mortem examination performed by Mr E. Walker, veterinary surgeon, who came to the conclusion that she had died from being over-ridden, all her organs been m a health; condition. Aa effort is being made to raise the foal which is a very valuable one, by hand, and it is hoped it will be successful.
