HANLAN'S ' ADVICE TO ATHLETES.
. Hanlan, a few days ago, presented the prizes at at Phillip's Grammar School, Sydney, tc the boys who had been successful m the .school sports, and addressing a wee boy, who gazed with awe into his face, he said : •'■ My brother athelete, I wish you to succeed, the only advice I give you — without which you can never succeed— is to be a go»d boy. Take all possible care of yourself, keep away from bad compauy, use no liquor of any kind, and do not smoke. ; If you act upon that ad* vice, I see you have both the men* tal and the physical capacity for success." Speaking subsequently, m the course of his remarks Hanlon said : " All the advice I can give to mv brother athletes is that if they would make a success m the athletic world they must take care of themselves. Suppose I was twenty»«three years of age before I knew the taste of a glass of liquor smoked a cigai\ And it is to .this that I attribute my success. My advice to athletes is to keep away from intoxicating liquors and tobacco without which there is not the least use m any of you trying to excel. From my I own experience I know that, although as far as your physical constitution is concerned you raay be the greatest wonder m the world, there is no chance for you if you do ijofc care for, yourselves as. l suggest. I don't- -suppose that any of you will /enter into the pro-; fessional world, but whether you do or not, always row to win." ,
