COUNTY EXPENDITURE.
TO THE EDITOB. Bir, — Through the kindnes* of Mr James Linton, I am m t position to state that the sum of £77 9s 2d has been charged against the Karere District on account of the Kawau Bridge. Wha* does the Municipal Corporation's Act say : " Where a bridge crosses a utream of which one bank is within a Borough, such bridge shall be under the control of, an 1 shall be maintained by, the Borough ,.. The Council of the Borough may recover from the Council of the County m which the other bank of such stream is, a reasonable share of the annual cost of maintaining such a bridge." T« £77 9i 2 a reasonable share of the cost of that small bridge ? I an afraid onr worthy County Councillor has been deceived by bin twin-brother the Mayor. I am, &c. Viggo Mo"«kai>. [Mr Monrad ii laboring under a misapprehension is ta the Kawaa stream being the boundary between the Borough of Palmerston and the County. It is not; the boundary is fully six chains away from the hridje, consfquently the. ex» tract from the Municipal Corporations Act, the letter itnelf, and the sarcastic allusion to the twm-brqth.e.r loses all
point. With regard to tht price paid for the work : Mr Monrad's asseition tint it is excessive may or may not be quite true ; we would not undertake to contradict him ; but w« know that tenders were called three times, tlnse on the two first occasioM having been refused as being two high.— Ed. M.TJ.
