CAUGHT NAPPING.
It is not often that an opponent can steal a march upon Mr. Hawkins, but he certainly was caught upon the hop at the recent sitting of the District Court. The learned counsel was -piling- on the agony as only gentlemen of the long robe can— when they, have a point to work. The advocate, had " Johnny Mahony " under the microscope, and it was bis interest to make that. GeltoMaoric gentleman appear, if not absolutely perfection, as near to it as it was possible for frail humanity to go. In winding up a glowing eulogium, he said the Chief -war " a man of honor, a man of respectability, of standing, of weight, of account, and— ■ and — and " . Here he paused to uaearth a few more flattering attributes, when Mr. Perkins slyly suggested, " and no account." " Quite so, quite, so ; and of '■ no account, your Honor," repeated? Mr. Hawkins, and it was not until the solemnity of the (J/ourfwas disturbed by a general guffaw, that it dawned upon the. confiding counsel that he had been " had." - • •
