GILDIN THE CAGE.
I have it on the authority of Le Sage, the author of " Gil Bias," that " Honorf don't always change? the. map," but evidently the prornptera of the Sandon Railway hold a very different opinion. At the starting, of the venture Dr. Rockstrow was induced to promise to take so.m* shares, hut since then neither, wheedling nor threatening, could beguile him into completing the transaction, and a. legal sword has been chronioally dangling orer his head. At the recent meeting of. '.share? holders, a vacancy m the Directory;had to be filled up, and after the honor had been offered to, and declined by, every share-, holder m the room, the difficulty .'"■was obviated by electing the Doctor, who was not present. Possibly his nominator*— Messrs. Gow°r and McLennan— may think that having gilded the cage the game has been snnred, but if I know anything of the wily Teuton, lie is too old a bird to be caught with chaff.
