COMING EVENTS CAST THEIR SHADOWS BEFORE.

The Ministry of Defeats are m a hole, and their- pocket orjjau, tlis Post, is dping its beat to pull them out of it. It is quite plain now that the Estimates will hare to be solad and heeled, and congbquantly the Wellington Scr^ comes to the aid of the Political Cobbler, and tempers the wind to the shorn lamb. From the tone of the debate it has been made pretty clear that the Ministerial programme will not pass current, and this is the way m which our contemporary clears the way for the coming manipulation. It asserts that the voice of the House has been raised m condemnation of the policy introduced, and not against the introducers of the policy ; and consequently it would be quite competent for them to remodel it without loss of prestige. We confess we cannot see the matter iv that light, and any attempt to tinker up the Estimates should bo 1 the signal for the driping of the Ministry from the Treasury Benches. The real nature pf their policy has b.een from first to last a " complete try on," and they are prepared to do anything to secure an extended lease of office. It may be recollected that when the Barnacie Ministry captured the Ship of State they hoisted the flag of their predecessors, and had no programme of their own. Then the country tried to get lid of them, and they suffered defeat after defeat up % the question of personnel ; but now fiac they appear with a policy truly their own, their objectionable qualifications have been doubled. The Property Tax proved distasteful, and the personal effects were thrown overboard. The Beer Tax has brewed a storm which threatens to shipwreck Ministers, and it is hinted threepence per gallon will be knocked off ; and npw the Post clears the way for another eating of jthe leek. The Han. Hahht Atkinson may just as well say at once : " Gentlemen, those are our. views, but if they do not suit, we are quite willing to alter them until they do."
