'« Words av e things, and a drop at ln!c falling like den upon a thought, prsduoea that which znakes thousandf, perhaps millions thiuk."
The contest for Waitaki is over, that constituency proved true to its prinoipies, and haa sent another Liberal to join Mr. Shbimstci in its representation. The opulent, plutocratic, autocratic John" Reid, of Eldeislie. the favored Commissioner and nominee of the Hall Government, has received his conge, and the coveted honor has been conferred upon G-eohge Jonjss, jiui. The difeatshoujd prove a wnolesome lesson to the worsted candidate, and teach him "that although wealth is a very powerful lever, ill this colony it is not omnipotent, for while his signature to a cheque for £50,000 would be readily accepted, he is not tuble to purchase the honor of tacking M.H.Ti. to his name. That impudent and ignorant Croesus has been taught that the people he has insulted do not agree with him that the possession of gold should be the one qualification for the Legislature, and he has the poor consolation of knowing that in resigning the profitable office of a Royal Commissioner to become a Member of Parliument, he has lost the bone in grasping at the shadow. When Mr. Jones last interviewed tho Speaker, and made, his bow afc the bar of the Flonse, it was under very different auspices. He was then a prisoner for a breach of privilege, and stood a criminal before that august" assemblage* ; yet strange to. say, instead of being convinced of the enormity or heino'iisness of his offence, or bowed down with affliction and submission, he stood erect, and hurled defiance at bis astounded jurors, The present A.ttorney-G-eneral was then liis accuser, but instead of retracting one single iota of the charges made against Mr. Whittakbr they were reiterated with four-fold vigor. JSIO wonder, then, that tho Ministry of which he is a member, should shove forward an opulent and supposed powerful opnon.ent in the hope of shutting their Nemesis out of the House. The bubble, however, has burst, and Item — or Reid of Elderslie, as the plobian snub with aristocratic apings loves to be dubbed — with nil his broad acres finds himself weighed in the balance, and declared wanting. Mr. Jones has the reputation of being one of the best amateur violinists in the colony, and the worst taunt which the Hall organs can Bins; at him is that he is au " accomplished fiddler." Admitting such to be the case — as it really is — if; is more than probable that he will not only treat his quo.ndatn persecutors to music which will lead them a dance which they will not altogether, relish, but/ moreover, he. is. likely to make them pay the piper as well. Tt is a good job for the Attomey-G-eneral that he was turned out of Eden, !and been relegated to the company of the elderly females of the Upper Ho.u,se, as ho has been saved the disagreeable necessity of being- brought face to faoe, and upon terms of equality, with one whotn he tyrannically sought to crush, but signally failed in, the attempt.
