JUDICIAL MISTAKE.

The Chief Justice has .made a nice mess over Doherty's libel case at Blenheim. He (Dohei'ty, not the C.J.) was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labor, and when removed to prison was put to cooking. It was then discovered that hard labor cv)uld not be awarded for libel, and so that portion of the sentence was re-, mitted. The question now arises whether he cannot be altogether released under a habeas corpus, as Sheehan had a man at Coromandci released who had a sentence given him m excess of. the power of the Court.
