TH £ PI ISJ AFORE QPERA ■ : QQ.MPANY. ;
Feilding was on tip-toe of expectation when it -was announced that the celebrated Pinafore Opera Company 1 were abbi.it to give 1 an" entertainment m the township, and the masic-lovirig portion of the community revelled m anticipation of a musicaV treat. The affair came off m,. J^ajsmor's j-jjali on Tuesday evening, and w# must confess (p a, feeling* akin/ to that of diappointment. Whether it was that we had been Jed to expect too/much, or that surrounding circumstances prevented th,e company from doing full justice to'themselves, we cannojb say, but we' certainly considered the entertainment far from being the unqualified success which we had anticipated, The first part bofl,-. sisted of selections from ". H.M.S. Pinafore;" ; •but as these. were pieee-njeaj an,4 disjointed they appeared to those who had not; seen the, opera' little better than unintelligible jumble, without point or wit. $l>e second, part was an immense improYenien.t, at\d Cftn,sisted q£; selections frprq Maritana, Sprcerer and G|-iroii»-GtirQaa, m which the splendid Toicea: of the company successfully asserted their claims to ; the high reputation they haye achieved. "Scenes that are Biughtest" was exquisitely- rendered by Miss Leaf. Miss Hunter created a very favorable im.ipressibfli m "Alas, those Ghimes," apd Miss Teague wa» equally successful m her expres* sive rendering of "Coßstance." Tlie. gem lof the eyeniagj however, wa« the quintette ;"X rejoice," m. which Miss I<eaf, Miss Teague, and Messrs. Orain, Harding, and Riccardi took part. This was a. t reat which /alone was; worth the price of admission, the ; voices blending most harmoniously and pro-: duuing melody that, will not: scon; be forgotten. The closing piece was Offenbach's Operetta fjftiitfed <c The Rose of S'Fleiir," which excited great merriment, and sent the audience home m capital humor. We fejt :so>ry/^hat; this talented compapy h.?^d not a better, hall jn. which to display their powers. iTliey- had; indeed to play ut\der, adverse a barn-like room, a wretched : unfinished stage, without scenery or other 'accessories^ ai\d poor music. No wonder that •their; efforts .were marred r and we-can only .hope! that before the same or another opera i, company again. 1 pays usa :Tisit, our- Public Hall- will be available. ' ■ -'■
