CnELTEKHAM.— The residents of the Kiwitea are greatly pleased to find $hejr. can 'now 'obtain their leiters and papers at thej Cheltenham post office without having, to , send or come all the way to Fellding. Thb Cattib Show.— We are glad lo' v learn that Manawatu was not unrepresented at the Wanganui Cattle Show.^ held on Thursday last. Some very fine cattle passed through Feilding per train on Wednesday and we can only hope that we shall see their owners names figuring m the list of- prizetakers. The Exc?b,sio,k Team.—T he facilities considerately afforded by Mr. Eot;heram to the general public for visiting the Cattle Show and races at Wanganui, hehi on Thursday and Friday last, were'krgejy' a failed off The accelerated morning trains on those days being well filled with excursionists, especially on the latter, day ■. - . ' ; Public Homday.— Monday-next .wilLbe observed as a general hpLday, being the anniversary of tbe^Prince of Wales. The Post Office will be closed and the. Telegraph Office open oriJLy as on Sundays. There will b^ no mai\ for Palm^jatop on that daj, but an extra mail for that township will be made on Saturday evening. The. Railway T^a^eio. — Allusion was made m our< last to, the, rapidly increasing .amount' of traffic on, our railway. Since then. we. learn that the statiojvinas^eri despatched m one, f^om Feilding, upwards of 72,0.00, ie&p of timber, which was con-.. and that it is also probable that the duty on ! spirits will be increased by 2/- tho ■ gallon. We notice that some of the papers m giving publicity to these rumors omit the reimposition of the timber-duty, but tl'is must surely be an oversight, for no Government would be so insane as not to re-im-pose a duty, the repeal of which has done so much. mischief already. , CbiißStiaii Fibbwobkb.— The earth is now approaching one of those portions of her orbit m which meteors abound. The tleventh ' of the present month has been noted as the time when the greatest numbers have been observed, and some few years ago at Home, there was a magnificent display of these celestial fireworks, no less than 420 having been noted m the course of a single hour. Should the. firmanent be unobscured we shall probably witness Ja grand coruscation. , Those who are curious m such matters, will, do well to_ keep a good look out. PttEOHASED Pbivatblt.— The timber at the (Cheltenham sawmill, which failed to attract purchasers on the day of the auction sale 'by Messrs. Stevens and Gorton, has 'since been disposed of privately. Mr. R. Hammond, of York Farm, has purchased the whole lot, some 60,000 feet, and it is nqvr m course of removal per rail to Marton, the purchaser having sent down two of his teams for the purpose of conveying it to the station; Considerable difficulty is experienced m obtaining. the requisite number of trucks, owing to the demand for them m connection with the contract for sleepers and telegraph poles. The timber, we understand, is for a new residence which Mr. xHammond is erecting at York Farm. •■.
