"WAYS THAT ABE DARK."
Oldi colonists are not unfamiliar -with the "dodges " to which.the children of adversity have at times "to, resort m order- to inflate their- collapsing credit, and not a few of pur new arrivals are experienced m !' ways that are dark. V In the daily routine of a 7 journalistic life we frequently meet with instances recorded of '" sharp practice*" or transactions appropriately termed " shadyvery;" but we have seldom met with a more flagrant case of " hot coffee " thari came to our knowledge a day or two ago. The circumstances, are briefly these. A firm of sawmillers m the district received an order frofn a b.uilder m Wanganui for "a few thousand feet of timber, . about £70 worth. The Order' was received by them on the Bth instantV and having the timber required m stock, it was sent away without de-; lay, the last moiety having been despatched on tbe 10th, arid on the. 15th the firm, received from the builder a Polite invitation to attend: a meeting of his creditors, to' be held at time and place stated ! ■ • -. This is "too warm " altogether, arid if the law, as it at present. stand*--, would f ailto take cognizance of such a shady— or rather, dark— transaction as this, the sooner it is amended the better.
