We can well ■believe the statement of the "stuffing" of the meeting „ ith strangers, as we know of pur own knowledge that one little party of 'five persona went out, three of whom had not the privilege of a voice or a 6how of hiinds, for the simple reason that they do not. possess a vote. A Challenge.— As will be seen from our advertiseriient columns, Mr. -M'Donald has called a meeting to hear his side of the story, and he has ; (jailed upon the' pditor of this paper to come forward arid substantiate tlie charges made against him. The proposal is a fair and honorablp one, we accept it, and as we wish to deal fairly with Mr. M'Donald and now cbpsider'the matter «_"* judice, we refrain from making a comment, beyond barely announcing the challenge. D mgnn occupied the chair, there bein-. alsi prsent Messrs. R. Leary, Green, Wr.iy, <nd the librarian, Mr. Keeling. Tho business was not of an important character, merely passing a few accounts, and giving the necessary authority for the supplying of needed articles. It was also determined j to accept quarterly subscribers to tlie insti- j t titon-*, the quarters dating from the first day o f January, April, July, and October m each year. Mb. S-fEssoisr at Rang-ixikei Line.— •• Mr. Snelson addressed a meeting of the elector^ at the Taonui Sclioo'-honse, O'l Wednesday" evening, Mr.yM'Dowell being voted to the chair. At the outset of the meeting Mr. M'Dowell stated that although he consented to preside, such action was not to be taken as an indication that he was then a supporter of the candidate, for ?o fir he was unpledged to anyone. Mr. Snilb. n went very largely into his views, and "__'. !<e answered the various questions put t.) Yin satisfactorily, may be determined, by the fact that an unanimous vote of confidence was passed m him, there being not even one dissentient. The Royaii . lilusionists. ■'■ — Messrs. Thorn and Darvin, the Royal Illusionists, made thti?" appearance at tie Foresters' '{all, last night to a. large and appreti.-ibive a idience. The tricks and illusions uto of a most wonderful and mysterious character, Tr'iich even t « fact of witriessing is scarcely .iufficient to induce belief. On account of tbe late hour at whioh the entertainment concluded we are compelled to hold over a lengthy notice, but we would advise those who wish to witness the mysterious to bestow their patronage, We had almost forgot to mention that that old friend and favorite, Mons. Calon, presided at the piano, a fact which m itself should draw a house. A Littlb Knowledge is a Danoebous Thino.— -The Manawatu Highway has the same effect upon tbe Foxton Herald that a red rag is said to exercise upon a mad bull. In a sub-leader published yesterday there are no less than three evidonces bf how little the scribe knew about what be was writing. First it is asserted that Stoney Creek Ward is indebted to the extent of £262 17b. 6d.;. secondly, it says that Mr. Dalrymple'i Ward is £262 17s. 6d. m debt ; and' thirdly, that the rates m that gentleman' a Ward are only £150 per annum. In reply, we state that Stoney Creek Ward is not £262 17s. 6d. m debt ; that the Ward ' which is that amount behind is not repre> sented by Mr. Dalrymple j and further, that the rates of Stoney Cree_ are considerably over £150 per year. The Herald should confine itself to the Foxton Local Board, upon which it may be an authority, " CH-DD-iike AND BiANP."— The Noble Savage would appear ; to be all there at making a bargain, and possessing a keen eye fco Number One. As perhaps may be known a Native Lands Court is being held this week at Napier, and Mr. Booth, the commissioner, was instructed to arrange with the Maoris from this district for their transport thither. It was expected tbat fifty would go, and the modest request of the Chief was free passage over and £1000 foy expenses. As this would have been £20 a mail for hotel expenses,: besides coach hire, Mr. Booth '"' could not see it," and the terms we-e not granted. We believe, however, an Offer of £1000, to cover everything, was given and accepted, and the consequence was that a number of : travellers both male and female, took their departure on horseback. > Considering the primitive method: of dining and sleeping indulged m by the travellers, we think tho siu_ leaves a good margin for saving or spending. ■ The Borough Elections — Following close upon the elections for "-he House of Representatives, wdl come those to fill the, vacancies m the Municipal Council, caused by the effluxion of time. There are three councillors whose term of office will terminate with the present month, and the re» turning officer notifies that the nominations for candidates will be received up to noon of next Wednesday. The gentlemen who will have completed their term for which they were elected are, Councillors Linton, Jensscnj and Manson, We hear it is not the intention of the two last-named gentleman to seek re-election, a statement which will be hoard with regret. Of course we are aware that Mr. Manson's health .will not permit him to undertake the duties, bub as happily Mr. "Jensson can allege no sucli cause, we trust he will be prevailed upon to reconsider his decision, as he is not likely he would meet with opposition, and he is the stamp of a man the Council can ill afford to lose. The Battle on .the West Coast.— Ne*t week will be an 'exciting one along this Coast, and will decide the fate of three constituencies, Rangitikei opens the ball on Wednesday, upon which day the struggle between Mr. Maclean and Major Willis will take place. The latter gentleman was for some time merely looked upon as a warmingpan for Sir William Fox, but that haven of refuge is now closed to the erstwhile leader of the Opposition, The gallant Major was asked point blank, if, m the event of his being elected, and his chief defeated, would ha resign to make room for Sir William, and the prompt and proper reply was that if he were fortunate enough to secure the seat, he certainly had determined to stick to it. In Wanganui even tlie most sanguine,, supporters of Sir William Fox have lost heart, thrown up the sponge, and the calculations are now not on the result, but upon the majority by which Ballance will head the pell. Coming nearer home, the Manaw itn is a moral for Snelson, who every day is increasing the number of his followers, and tlie struggle, if the contest between that gentleman and Mr. Halcombe, can be called one, is sure to l esult :ih a brilliant victory for the People's Candidate.
